About Us

The McMaster University Saxophone Ensemble (or "sax choir") is a student ensemble featuring members of McMaster University's saxophone studios. We perform at concerts within the Music faculty, such as Student/Ensemble concerts, and the Student Composition Concert. We rehearse weekly on Monday evenings.

The ensemble was started in 2007 by members of the first-year studio at McMaster, in an attempt to bring together the skills learnt individually by each student in their own solo performance lessons. Five saxophones currently make up the ensemble, although that number fluctuates based on the given talent pool and community interest.

We play all kinds of music, from Classical works by Bach and Boccherini, to jazz works and world music of all kinds. We also play original works by both aspiring and accomplished composers, who wish to write in a not-so-traditional medium! We also play to raise awareness of the saxophone ensemble as a legitimate instrumental grouping, and to promote the composition of music for this unique and very very "saxy" combo!
